What is thermography?

Thermography utilizes the capabilities of specialized cameras that are highly sensitive to the detection of electromagnetic energy (light) in infrared wavelengths (heat). When the camera’s detectors sense the incoming IR heat, an electrical signal is produced that generates a visible image display. It is not radiation, noninvasive, no contact, and completely pain-free.

This method shows high accuracy and is a cost-effective form of screening for cancerous changes. The concept behind this test is that as cancer cells multiply, they need more oxygen-rich blood for growth. As there is an increase in blood flow to the tumor, the temperature around the tumor also increases. Here’s an NIH article about it.

Why use thermography?

When tissue changes, it will recruit new blood vessels in order to accommodate rapid growth, this is called neoangiogenesis. Blood vessels not only carry blood, but heat, the more heat the more of a heat signature gets picked up on the “thermo”gram. This is an early detection of cell lines that are starting to recruit blood vessels, which isn’t a good sign. Best to catch those early and go in for additional study and treatment if indicated.

Is a thermogram diagnostic?

No. If abnormalities are picked up on thermogram, additional study is recommended.

Does a thermogram replace other screening methods?

No. We still use standard screening methods. Thermograms offer additional information other screening methods do not. At present it’s termed “complimentary” screening.
