An Introduction to Herbal Extracts

Herbs have specific evidenced-based therapeutic properties. It’s important to use herbs according to best-use practices to achieve their highest therapeutic value and to avoid harm. There are several considerations to keep in mind. It starts with how the plants have grown, wild, biodynamic, or row farmed, sustainably or not. What they have grown around, neighboring plants can change the concentration of certain compounds in the harvested plant.

Some constituents will denature based on how and when they are harvested and stored before extraction if not managed appropriately. Regarding how the constituents are extracted and concentrated, high-tech methods extract natural medicines carefully. The testing ensures correct constituents are present and in the desired concentration. It’s a science these days.

Why Consider Herbal Extracts?

Our very bodies are built from the elements around us. Nature not only nourishes us with food and water, but it also has more sophisticated compounds hidden in specific flora that can correct dysfunction that has occurred. It’s logical, that natural medicine would be of great benefit to beings that are made from nature.

How Can We Help?

It’s the practitioner’s responsibility to understand each constituent and how/ when / how much/ how often/ how long/ what part/ what form to prescribe, and how these herbs work together synergistically in the formulation. The practitioner also needs to know when to avoid certain herbs when contraindicated. They also need to truly understand the herbal sourcing and quality, the ins / outs of the herbal “manufacturer.” Dr. Neale has been working with herbal medicine for over a decade and can help you use herbs to effect positive change in your body and avoid pharmaceutical medication use when safe and appropriate.
