How much do you know about Naturopathic Medicine?

On the topic of health habits, which best describes you?

I don’t eat many vegetables. Water? Nah, it has no flavor.

I’ve tried several diets. I’m tired of thinking about food.

I’ve dabbled in mindful eating and know I must start exercising.

I eat mindfully most of the time. I don’t eat like the “average” American, I exercise on occasion. However, I don’t know what supplements to take.

I have a basic supplement regimen, healthy eating is a habit now, and I exercise 2-3 times per week and have for some time.

My functional eating, lifestyle, and nutritional supplement habits are fine-tuned; I’m in the “maintenance zone.”

On active health habits, which best describes you?

I don’t think about my body too much; I only notice when something is wrong, when I’m in pain, or don’t feel normal.

I know I need to start somewhere to get healthier; I just don’t know where to begin. Google is overwhelming. I’m stuck in “decision fatigue.”

I watch Doctor Vlogs or follow Insta/TikTok Health Videos; I’m open and want to learn.

I read books written by Doctors on various health topics, I follow a few doctor podcasts, I'm well versed in functional eating, I have a regular exercise routine, and I have for years. Based on my reading, I have picked out high-quality supplements. I'd like to check my thyroid hormones and other metabolic markers I read about.

I've ordered some labs I need help interpreting and creating an action plan to correct. I'm fine-tuning my functional eating and exercise plan to achieve optimal well-being and higher-level performance goals.

I need someone as a coach to make sure I stay accountable to my master plan and to have someone to brainstorm with. I also need a prescriber and someone with Doctoral expertise to ensure I stay safe with my DIY health adventures.

How much support do you have?

Not sure if I have any. Especially at home, my kids and spouse are not on board and do not believe in “natural” medicine.

I can work around the folks I live with.

My friend wants to do this with me.

My family will support me; they won’t make my process harder than it already will be.

My spouse will likely join me at my appointment. My spouse wants to understand my process, learn with me, and know how to best support me throughout my healing journey.

What obstacles do you foresee on your healing journey?

I need sugar! I might addicted. (Or trade “sugar” for coffee, diet soda, soda pop, alcohol, opioids (hydrocodone, fentanyl), cannabis, tobacco/nicotine, energy drinks, processed or “fast” foods, ibuprofen/OTC pain killers, Benadryl/anti-histamines, sleep medication.)

My work or family management schedule makes it difficult to focus on myself and my needs.

I’ve tried several diet and exercise programs. I have a couple of drawers full of supplements I started taking but stopped. Consistency, or stick-to-it-ness, is difficult for me.

I’m working through some internal blocks, unsure what they are.

Most of the time, even if I get derailed or dysregulated by some trip stressor or emotional bomb, I pop back into my healthful routines after only a short while (one week max) of being off.

None. I’ve worked through them with practice, self-awareness, and community. My health and wellness come first, then everything and everyone else.

On the topic of emotion, which best describes you?

I don’t like feeling.

When I was a kid, we weren’t allowed to show emotion; emotion wasn’t something my family did together.

I know I have feelings and am open to feeling them; I just don’t do that too often.

I talk about how I feel to my friends and family. It’s not uncommon.

I ask others how they feel on a regular; I am inquisitive and enjoy exploring emotion and what it is about, either my own or, when invited, others I care about.

I can comfortably be myself no matter the audience, I can be vulnerable when I need to be, and I am good with being in discomfort for a spell so I can get past something I’m ready to get past.

How ready are you for true and sustainable change?

I’m here because my (insert name of loved one here) wants me to change or worries about me.

I love my couch. Sitting is my favorite body position, or, arguably, lying down.

I park far from the store door and take the stairs instead of the elevator.

I have an active job. I have to walk a lot, bend down, lift things.

My job isn’t active, but I have an active lifestyle. I work around the house, garden, and build things, and I like to get out and hike, walk, ride bikes, ski, snowboard, etc.

Regarding staying power and stamina for hard, which best describes you?

I’m not much into suffering in discomfort, uh, yeah. Why suffer?

Can we negotiate? What if I reduce my coffee intake but don't give it up?

I’m ready to take this one step at a time, but I can’t tackle all the change and all the hard at once.

I am almost there, to that place of sustainability; I mostly get right back on track after I fall off.

I get knocked down, but I get up again—nothing is gonna keep me down!

On the topic of a Doctor/Patient relationship, which best describes you?

The doctor knows best. I trust the doctor. The doctor has the answers.

I don’t love taking pills for my health problems, there has to be another way, but my doctor doesn’t have other solutions for me.

I want to find other answers to understand the causation of my symptoms, not just treat the symptoms. I’m looking for a doctor who can help me look into causation. A doctor who will listen to my ideas.

I’m about ready to feel into my own agency. I know what “agency” means now.

I mostly trust my own decision making, but it’s nice to have my doctor make decisions with me.

I have agency (take responsibility). I advocate for myself medically. I engage my doctors for their expertise and experience, but ultimately, the decisions about my health are mine and I have answers.
